Question on Phonon Tunneling & Thermoelectrics

Postby Darby on April 7th, 2015, 8:43 pm

QUESTION for our resident Physicists and EE's ...

I was reading the following article on Phonon Tunneling (7-Apr-2015) over at MIT, and although the article made no mention of it, I was left wondering if this effect represents a potential new avenue of opportunity for increased Thermoelectric conversion efficiency, given recent advances with metamaterial research and nano-scale sandwiching of same.

Comments welcome.

I'm not a physicist but this seems to me a nano scale radio transmission.

Note that salt is both the transmitter and receiver across the nano gap, so they would be naturally tuned to each other. They also reference a "microscopic" version of Maxwell's Equations, which supports the notion of EM transmission. I would not be surprised to find a harmonic relationship between successful heterogeneous communications of this sort.
