Anyone here well versed in PIC18F4550 or USB-UART bridge?

I was thinking of communicating my 8052 microcontroller with the PC via USB port. Seems that it is a hassle to do, and USB is not as flexible as the RS232 serial ports. I'd like to know if there is anyone who has hands-on experiences with USB bridges. I found a chip but it's SMD, unable to fit in my strictly-breadboard design. I found that there are some microcontrollers which can directly communicate with PC, the PIC model listed here being one of them. It'd be helpful if someone here worked with that too.
