Robots of the Future: Sex Robots???

Postby weakmagneto on April 30th, 2012, 9:46 am

Upon reading this article "Robot Prostitutes, The Future of Sex Tourism" (link below), it reminded me of the movie "Blade Runner". The movie is about a future where genetically engineered "replicants" were programmed to provide human entertainment (including pleasurable pursuits) and labour. It also makes me think of that movie "The Stepford Wives".

I remain conflicted about this subject. There is a tv series on the National Geographic Channel titled "Taboo". In one of its episodes on "Strange Love", it featured a man who lived in a committed relationship with a customized "sex mannequin". He felt that the mannequin was his wife and loved her. He even went so far as to create a personality for her and her thoughts. To me, this begs the questions: Would sexual relations with robots create dysfunctional relationships with other human beings in society? What would be the impacts?

I've read some discussion about this topic around the internet and haven't seen it brought up on here. There are so many avenues to explore with regard to the issue. Feel free to answer the preceding questions or start with this one:

Would future "sex robots" alleviate some of the problems with social ills such as rape, human trafficking and exploitation, and sexually transmitted diseases?

Sexual instincts are very complex and unlikely to be satisfied by artificial partners for a very long time. Some people will of course object to the unavoidable proliferation of mechanical sexual partners but it seems harmless enough to me. The movie West World comes to mind when ever this comes up and of course in the movie it goes terribly wrong. People have a natural revulsion to less than perfect human replicas which is the interesting part.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

Whenever there is android in a sci-fi movie it seems the central character displays a distrust an or dislike for the androids, I offer Aliens and I Robot as examples. I believe this represents an underlying desire to establish social order by emotional control of others in relationships. Robots cannot be trusted (Terminator etc.) and they do not call STD's social diseases for no reason. To one degree or another all social interactions are about control which is both the appeal and the shortfall of dolls.

I'd say the opener by Magneto is a deep post presented in a casual friendly way. I love the movie Bladerunner because it deals with serious issues which are beyond the reach of science. Literature (including that JCameron/PDick movie) does honor to the human mind as much as science does when it investigates the universe and nature.

I particularly like the moment where Rutger Hauer confronts his Designer and says in effect "Why did you not give me a longer life?" and "What can you do about it?"

The basic reason for doing science, and criterion for judging, is that it does honor to the human mind and this is also the highest criterion of literature which addresses those terribly important questions which we cannot answer empirically and objectively.

And so it is with even a simple/complicated matter like Love, and the lovable Android that you imagine. There are serious nontrivial questions to be asked which I cannot imagine anyone ever answering. But maybe someone here will.

I think an important aspect that would be important to answering this question is how realistic the "sex robots" would act and "feel" (to put it in appropriate terms). If they simulate sex with another human being perfectly, then I do believe they could help with human trafficking, exploitation, and STDs (depending on their affordability as well). If they are not realistic enough, I fear people would still crave the "real thing." As for rape, I do not think these robots would be effective in completely eliminating the problem. From what I know, rape is more about power and control over the individual than the sexual experience itself. So, unless someone is able to purchase a sex robot that is programmed to resist the act, then I don't think a rapist would be interested. Though, this is only speculation on my part.

I just found this interesting article on rape, that may help shed some light on the issue.

Dick/Cameron answer our questions in a characteristically LITERARY way by making the two characters we most sympathetically identify with turn out to be themselves Androids.

If we are talking about advanced hightech then presumably androids would manufacture the androids and they might not choose to sell them. An android girl might not choose to have sex with you unless she wanted to. Or she might just for the heck of it, even if she didn't feel especially turned on. Who knows? these are deep complex matters aren't they.

But about *buying*, I don't know. That issue was partially settled for humans in the mid-19th century more or less. Kind of borderline in some places.

William Yeats about 100 years ago was wondering about Love-related matters and tossed a penny to help him decide

...For love is the crooked thing
There is nobody wise enough
to find out all that is in it.

For he would be thinking of love
till the stars had run away,
and the shadows eaten the moon.

Ah penny, brown penny, brown penny,
one cannot begin it too soon!

Later on in life he said:
"Maybe the bride-bed brings despair,
for each an imagined image brings,
and finds a real image there."

By nature, Sex Robots would be no different to sex toys all ready available.

Sure there would be the odd occasion where someone gets too attached and wants to ignore social interaction, just so they can spend time with their robot.
But thats no different from a man who ignores his family so he can go bet on the horses every night of the week, a man technically married to horse racing or gaming or sports etc.

If porn itself does infact reduce crimes such as rape then I'm sure these robots would help in that area also.

If there is one thing evident throughout all of Man's history, it is that we (as a whole) need human interaction, society.
Imo a sex toy can not interfere with this natural phenomena.

By that reasoning, wouldn't legalization of prostitution reduce crime rate? As a regularized industry ofc.
I don't have any references but I wonder if this reasoning is true in places like Vegas and Amsterdam.

Blade Runner is an amazing movie. Although, I think to better put your point in perspective, the movie Cherry 2000 is a better example at this. From IMDB "In the future, a man travels to the ends of the earth to find that the perfect woman is always under his nose" [1]. There is also this episode of Futurama that tackles that same question with the answer that sexual relations with robots would indeed create dysfunctional relationships and lead the population to extinction (their silly spin of humor)[2].

To your question: "Would sexual relations with robots create dysfunctional relationships... What would be the impacts?" As edy420 pointed out, "sex Robots would be no different to sex toys already available" and in assuming a sex robot is a sex toy would imply that sex toys also create dysfunctional relationships. However I do not see the reality of this occurring on a widespread level. I think it would be uncomfortable for some and out of the question for others. I believe that it would not be able to replace human beings due to the dynamic nature of human relationships, such as affection, communication, trust, love, ect.

If it were to become widespread (pretty big if), I do believe it would reduce crime rates and even STDs. But again, I just don't see that happening.

Also, I think it serves to point out that in japan there is a similar trend predominant with the "otaku" fanbase whereas young Japanese men are becoming more introverted and solitary with a fascination of anime. Of course this does not mean all otakus are that way, but it's still interesting to see a similar correlation between what is happening on one side of the world because of this fanbase and what may happen. Some links citing studies and blogs on this trend below [3][4][5][6]. Warning, nsfw.

Also we're almost there with the sex robots :p [7]

Hi all,

Long story.. but the short version is that my late Wife and I moved in with a co-worker about 15 years ago. He was previously married to a lady (silver spoon type) that bankrupted him and took everything but the house. We had furniture but wanted to live in a house instead of an apartment, so it mutually worked out for us all.

Anyway, he was an emotional mess from his divorce and had bought one of those super realistic Living Dolls. He kept it/her in his bedroom. I had no idea they looked so super real. Not a blowup doll, but Heavy, Fleshy and Posable. I don't think he ever had physical sex with the Doll (despite it being designed for that purpose).. but rather used it/her for visual stimulation in satisfying his sexual appetite manually. His thing was in buying it/her fancy lacy undergarments, makeup etc, and putting it/her in provocative poses for his visual pleasure.

His Ex came after him for more money one day, he had a nervous breakdown, and disappeared with his personal belongings. I didn't hear from him again for about 8 years. He is doing well now and still has no (live?) female friends that I know of.

I am still single since my wife passed away 9 years ago. I tried Match.com but without much success. It's really hard (making a connection that is). So I have thought about those Dolls too. I'll hold off for now until they can move, talk and nearly pass for human. Then again.. I'm into Robotics, Electronics and Software.. Perhaps I should spend some time making a new friend for myself?

I can see a time, just a few years from now, when AI will evolve enough to design a perfect partner in a virtual world, tuned specifically for your emotional needs. Ever see the Movie "Simone"? I can see someone falling in love with their virtual counterpart that lives solely inside their computer. Imagine the thrill when they can transfer the Screen Image of their artificial Mate to a Robotic Doll's physical looks and then upload/install the AI personality program too. Thus effecting a transfer from virtual world to real world for a more hands on approach.

With the marriage rates so low and divorce rates so high.. is this our future? Will we find more comfort in custom designing our soul mates? Freaky times just ahead folks..lol.

Best wishes,
Dave :^)

Great story Dave, thanks for sharing.

If I'm honest, then its a bit of an eye opener :)

It could solve a lot of problems, like preventing gold digging wives taking all your money or help reduce the human reproduction rate.

Then there's fact that it can be custom tailored to your physical desire and needs.
Your robot could be a super model one night and a hollywood star the next.

Imo, it takes a lot of fun out of having a relationship, but I can see how it could become a popular trend, especially amongst single men who aren't looking for someone.

You should get started on making them pronto!
Sounds like a big money maker to me :P

If all one wants is release, why not a cattle prod up the anus, a sharp shock to the prostate, and ahhhh? Real women are complicated, interesting, sexy, and fun. And sometimes unfathomably difficult to woo, but the game is ALWAYS worth the candle. For those too afraid of women, there is a device called the Fleshlight that I suspect sells for under $200; it apparently comes in different configurations.

I used to hang out with a County Coroner. When they find you dead of a coronary with one of those inflatable dolls, that story is gonna make the rounds for years. Everybody masturbates at some point in their lives; only a few have sex with a misshapen beach ball.

I agree.
But Dave's story reminds me of a few men at work.
One brings up his Ex wife at work at least weekly and he's been single for around 16 years.
He ended up with a really nice lady at one point, but he broke it off as it just didn't work out for him, and no one can figure out why, including him :P (who wouldn't like coming home to a cooked meal, oral sex and a service maid every day!)

While I don't think robots are going to replace a human counter part for those who like to play the game, Imo there will always be a market for something like a sex robot.

I wonder if its counted as cheating if your using a robot?
My initial instinct tells me yes, but I'm sure others could get away with it, and perhaps this could even save marriages where each partner has a different level of sex drive.

Thanks Edy..

Obviously, the real thing is usually the best, even when it takes a Herculean effort to make things happen and get all the settings just right to obtain the desired results.

However.. I'd probably prefer a Sex-Bot over a cattle prod up the Anus.. pretty much any day of the week (IMHO).. but to be honest.. I've never tried either so I'm very likely biased for the seemingly less painful choice..lol.

Best wishes,

Just a quickie..

To dispel the myth that these are all "misshapen beach balls".. This one runs about $6000.00. I can't post a body shot as this is a general public forum, but the rest of her looks just as good. They are called Real-Dolls if you want to Goggle them (sorry, pun not intended).

Pun?
For a long time women have had all they need to mechanically stimulate themselves.

An sex-bot is not always plan A. I'm not one of the minority that have a good mate. In dating, most women build up your hopes when they really don't want you, to get what they can get.

A little COMPETITION would help. Sexbots would be available, rational, disease-free, non-criminal, and have no emotional baggage.

Hopefully not "programmed to destroy" like the women I meet.

Most mature and secure women are NOT like that. Perhaps you should re-examine the type of woman you are pursuing. I had to change the type of guy I date, I keep getting the same type of man vying for my attention. I now turn down dates and avoid that type all together. BUT I do know there are some wonderful men out there and haven't given up hope. Perhaps he will find me one day, but I am not worried about it. I am actually enjoying my own company... :)

I don't know what they are like until we've dated, they don't come with a "warning".

Your attention? Why would a man date a woman? For company. If she doesn't want his company why is she dating him? [And spending his money....?]

I now turn down dates...

What else don't you like about men?

OR not dating him as in my case (I come from a small town and often know my potential date mates)... We are NOT always spending HIS money either... I've been on dates where I have been the one paying for the date or sharing the cost for that matter.

I now turn down dates...

Only men date badly?

No, women date badly, too. We are all huiman beings making all of us imperfect.

Yes, when women are interested in a man they are great, they put away the cash register and talk to the man normally.

I didn't mean to insult women, just the dating process...

Perhaps I am too old, ugly or wierd to get a woman interested. My avitar is an actual photo, retouched! Ha ha! Sex-bots would eliminate my inevitable dissappointments of dating.

What about play companions for children? That could help many lonely children.

What if pedafiles bought them? Wierd...

For those who seek a sexual partner, please allow an old man to offer some advice. The most effective sexual organ you have is your ear. Listen, really listen, to prospective mates. Robots never say anything interesting, witty, or sensual.

There are those of us who get frustrated and feel that way. I have felt that way many times, especially when something doesn't work out. But, in the end, it is all about attitude and how you feel about yourself. If you can't love yourself, how can you love others? It's about choices, you can give up, you can try again, or you can change your attitude, but it does start with you. If you get knocked down, get back up! It's your choice though...

I love people that are interested and interesting and I love to talk and listen.
True story…
I once advised a friend who seemed to have problems getting past the first date to take an interest in the girl and ask her about herself. She dumped him for being too nosey.
