Presidents don't wear tan suits as a rule. Since the 50s, power suits have usually been black, charcoal gray (perhaps with pinstripes), or dark blue. I think the tie was even more off-putting. It's as shocking as JFK not wearing a hat. You just can't trust Democrats to be unstylish.

Some people call it Taupe rather than Tan, meaning a light brown with a tinge of grey. The word derives from the French word 'Taupe' meaning a Mole.

As the photos indicate, US Presidents have worn paler summer suits while conducting official business of state for well over half a century. Both of those archive pictures of Roosevelt and Truman are formal posed shots taken in the Oval Office during their respective terms of office.

The only sumptuary convention followed in Washington DC is that summer suits are not usually worn after Labour Day.
